Breast Reduction Q&A

What is a breast reduction?

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and weight of overly large breasts. Many individuals choose this surgery to:

  • Alleviate physical discomfort like back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts
  • Improve posture
  • Enhance mobility
  • Achieve a more balanced body proportion

In addition, a breast reduction can improve self-esteem and provide more clothing options if you’re limited by your breast size.

How is a breast reduction performed?

During a breast reduction procedure, which typically lasts 2-4 hours, Dr. Davila removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of your breasts. He makes incisions around the areola (the darker skin around the nipple), vertically down the breast, and sometimes along the breast crease, depending on the size and shape of your breasts.

He then repositions the nipple and areola to achieve a more natural appearance after the reduction. The remaining breast tissue is reshaped to form a smaller, lifted breast.

In some cases, he may use liposuction to further contour the breast and underarm areas. Once he achieves the desired size and shape, he closes the incisions with sutures.

What can I expect during my breast reduction recovery?

Recovery from breast reduction surgery generally takes several weeks. Immediately after surgery, your breasts are bandaged, and you may need to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and support the healing process.

Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are common in the first few days, but Dr. Davila can prescribe medication to help manage your pain.

Most patients can return to work within 1-2 weeks, although you should avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. Your provider gives you detailed postoperative care instructions, including how to protect your incisions and manage any discomfort.

When will I notice the final result of my breast reduction?

You’ll see a noticeable change in your breast size immediately after surgery, though the final results become clearer as swelling decreases and the tissue settles. Most patients see the final result 2-3 months after surgery.
