Arm Lift Q&A

What is an arm lift?

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a cosmetic surgery designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms, creating a more toned and defined appearance. It’s particularly popular for people with loose, sagging skin due to weight loss, aging, or genetics.

This procedure helps achieve a firmer, more sculpted look when diet and exercise alone aren’t enough to tighten your skin.

How does an arm lift procedure work?

During an arm lift, Dr. Davila makes an incision along the inner or back side of your upper arm. The length and placement of the incision can vary depending on the amount of skin to be removed.

Once he makes the incision, he removes excess skin and fat and tightens the underlying tissues. In some cases, he may perform liposuction to remove extra fat.

Next, he takes the remaining skin, smoothes it over the newly shaped arm contour, and then closes the incision with sutures. The surgery typically takes 2-3 hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Does an arm lift cause scarring?

Yes, an arm lift does result in scarring, but Dr. Davila places the incisions in a less visible area along the inside of your arm. The length of the scar depends on how much excess skin he needs to remove.

Over time, the scar will fade and can be minimized with proper care, such as using scar creams or treatments recommended by Dr. Davila.

While scarring is inevitable, many patients find that the improved shape and appearance of their arms outweigh the visibility of the scar.

What can I expect during recovery from an arm lift?

Recovery from an arm lift takes several weeks. You should be able to return to light activities within a week or two but avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks. Swelling and bruising are common in the first few weeks, but these will gradually subside.

Wear compression garments to help reduce swelling and support your arms as they heal. Full recovery and final results may take a few months.
